Meet Our Dental Team

At Island Children’s Dentistry, you can be confident in the pediatric and orthodontic dental practice you have chosen for your child. Drs. Gema Island and Nickie Bastani each have specialized training in pediatric dentistry. Dr. Bob Marzban is an orthodontist who is trained in malocclusions and dental crowding and Dr. Nefeli Vasilakou is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics who believes that a beautiful smile can change lives.

Dr. Gema Island

Pediatric Dentist

Dr. Gema Island is a pediatric dentist, a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, and a member of the Virginia Dental Association. Dr. Island founded Island Children’s Dentistry in 2014. She’s dedicated to providing the highest quality of dental care in the most gentle, positive, and enthusiastic manner possible.

Born and raised right here in Fairfax County, Dr. Nickie is proud to provide expert pediatric dental care in the very community where she grew up. She feels a deep connection to the families she serves-many of whom are neighbors, classmates and friends from childhood.

Dr. Bob Marzban

Orthodontist

Dr. Marzban started with dental school at the Medical College of Virginia where he earned his DDS Summa Cum Laude. A month after graduation, he moved away from Virginia for the first time since early childhood for his residency in Orthodontics. The University of Connecticut gave him a Masters in Dental Science, a specialty degree in Orthodontics, and a primo seat for college basketball games.

Dr. Nefeli Vasilakou

Orthodontist

Dr. Nefeli Vasilakou is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics who believes that a beautiful smile can change lives. Born and raised in Athens, Greece, Dr. Nefeli moved to the United States to pursue her dream of becoming an Orthodontist. She studied at Saint Louis University, where she earned her Master of Science in Dentistry, specializing in Orthodontics. She then completed a one year fellowship in Cleft and Craniofacial Orthodontics at Seattle Children’s Hospital, one of the leading Craniofacial Centers in the United States, where she gained invaluable experience in treating complex cases.

Give Kids a Smile (GKAS)

Dr. Island is honored to serve on the Executive Committee as Co-Chair of Give Kids a Smile (GKAS) in Northern Virginia for 2025–2026. This national program provides underserved children with access to free oral health care, promoting healthy smiles and brighter futures.

School Visits

Every February, in celebration of National Children’s Dental Health Month, Dr. Island and her team bring smiles to local schools! They teach kids how to keep their teeth strong and healthy with fun lessons about brushing, flossing, and choosing tooth-friendly snacks. The visits include story time, sing-alongs, and hands-on demonstrations with Dr. Island’s lovable puppet friends — making learning about oral health exciting and memorable! If you’d like Dr. Island or Dr. Nickie to visit your child’s school, please give our office a call. We’d love to bring the fun and smiles to your classroom!

Community Support

Beyond the dental office, Island Children’s Dentistry proudly supports local school 5Ks, plays, and community events that encourage children to grow healthy and confident.

International Outreach

Dr. Island also volunteers with the International Esperanza Project, providing essential dental care to underprivileged children in Guatemala. This commitment reflects her belief that every child deserves access to quality dental care, regardless of their circumstances. McLean Central Park

On Saturday, March 29, 2025, McLean came together to celebrate a long-awaited milestone—the grand reopening of McLean Central Park and the unveiling of its newly renovated playground at 1468 Dolley Madison Blvd. What was once a dream fueled by determination and community spirit is now a vibrant, inclusive space where children can learn, play, and grow.

The celebration took place at the new McLean Central Park Pavilion, where families, supporters, and community leaders gathered to honor the team’s incredible efforts. A special thanks was extended to all generous donors, whose names and businesses are now permanently showcased on benches and walls throughout the park—a lasting
tribute to their support.

In attendance were members of the McLean Central Playground Team, along with contributors like Dr. Gema Island, who played a vital role in making the renovation possible. The event included the official Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, marking the beginning of this exciting new chapter for McLean Central Park.
This playground isn’t just a beautiful new space—it’s a symbol of what our community can accomplish when we come together.
