When Should My Child See An Orthodontist?

Most likely you’ve been curious when you should first take your child to the orthodontist. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends parents bring their children in for an initial evaluation at age 7. From here, we can identify developing issues of the teeth and jaws allowing us to choose the ideal time to create the quickest and most effective treatment. We won’t always start orthodontic treatment at this early age, but evaluating early gives us the ability to plan ahead.

What's Special About Age 7?

At 7 years old the first molars and other dental “landmarks” will have made their presence known, and your orthodontist here at Island Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics can see how your child’s bite (or how the teeth line up) is progressing. With the help of some amazing technology available at our office, we can identify if the child is missing any adult teeth, if they have any extra teeth that may cause changes in normal tooth arrivals, or if they have facial bones that are growing unusually. Depending on the specific needs of your child, your nearby orthodontist may recommend early interceptive orthodontic. Only a small portion of children need the first phase of treatment, and if it is not needed we will observe your child’s dental development until the perfect time for their treatment.
